I managed to get my laptop to fall asleep when I close the lid. The problem was not very interesting: the setting was that “When sleeping, enter:” was set to “Standby, then hibernate,” rather than “Standby.” For this grave sin, KDE Powerdevil would refuse to sleep at all, without even a message in the logs. Perhaps when I repartition my drive I’ll finally have enough room for a nice spacious swapfile to hibernate on.

Relatedly, my mother came to me this morning for help installing Linux on her new Surface Pro; this was an idea she had decided on that morning, but which she says has been brewing for a while. Needless to say, I am having issues getting that to fall asleep, or even just to shutdown properly, as well. Thus my laptop sleeping struggles continue.
